By Mo-Hua Yang Deputy Director at ITRI, Hsinchu, Taiwan LEV Conference, Taipei, March 2005
Dr. Yang gave an overview of the LEV industry in Taiwan and presented the goals of ITRI as a government organization to promote LEVs and support the industry.
According to Dr. Yang, Taiwan electric mobility production was close to 300,000 units in 2003.
Heavy electric scooters received governmental subsidies from 1995 to 2002. When this program was stopped in 2003, sales dropped noticeably. Pedelecs have been supported with 3,000 NT (74 Euros) since 2001 and 13,000 units have been sold since then. There is a large number of small electric scooter makers in Taiwan and they are accepted by the consumers.
ITRI supports the industry by means of research, promotion and technical development, such as a communication protocol for electric components in cooperation with ExtraEnergy. The institute’s goal is to create a new generation industry for zero emission vehicles. Products should meet customer’s requirements.
A development strategy for the LEV industry in Taiwan as well as promotion projects are explained best in the charts in Dr. Yang’s presentation that can be downloaded at www.ExtraEnergy.org.
